Sayeed Muhammad: Bangladesh and Russia signed a protocol leading to some amendments to the intergovernmental agreement, reached on November 2, 2010 for jointly constructing Roppur nuclear power plant in the country.
They inked the protocol on Monday on the sideline of the 62nd General Conference of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) being held in Vienna, says a press release sent by Triune Group, PR Agency for ROSATOM in Bangladesh, yesterday.
Bangladesh’s Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman and Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Director General Alexey Likhachev signed the procedure on their respective governments’ behalf, reports The Financial Express.
The instrument facilitates the possibility of involving a specialised Russian company in designing and installation of physical protection system for the main and auxiliary facilities of the power plant.
It also includes the clause saying all the safety and security measures to ensure physical protection of the nuclear power plant will be taken in accordance with the requirements and guidelines of IAEA.
Rooppur NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors, each of 1,200 MW capacity, is being constructed by Atomstroyexport (ASE), Engineering Division of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia under strict monitoring by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA).
