M Humayun Kabir: The government’s quota reform committee has recommended for abolishing the existing quota in the first and second class government jobs (9th to 13th grades).
A gazette notification will be issued if the cabinet gives approval to the recommendations in its next meeting, said Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam after the regular Monday’s cabinet meeting, reports The Daily Star.
On August 13, the committee had suggested abolishment of almost all quotas in civil service prioritising merit-based recruitment, he said.
At present, about 56 per cent of government jobs are reserved for candidates from various quotas.
M Shafiul Alam, also the head of seven-member quota review committee formed on July 2, said the recommendations have been sent to the prime minister.
In April, students of public and private universities across the country took to the streets demanding reforms in the quota system.
In the wake of mass protests, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 11 announced in the parliament that there will be no quota in the government jobs.
The quota reform body was asked to submit a report within 15 workings days. Later, it was given 90 more working days as it could not finish collecting information about the system.
Citing a High Court order, the premier, on July 12, said it was not possible to reform the freedom fighters’ quota.
