Khaleda is ill but not in danger, says BSMMU

Sayeed Muhammad: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s physical condition is not under any danger, but she should be treated at a hospital run by specialized doctors of all fields, doctors have suggested.
A day after the newly formed five-member medical team examined Khaleda at the Old Dhaka jail, the physicians have also said they think Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is the best hospital to be referred.
BSMMU Director Brig Gen Abdullah Al Harun, who led the medical team, came up with the comments at the medical university yesterday.

The team also found Khaleda is ill, however, she did not develop any new illness after she was jailed, said the BSMMU director, adding, “The diseases diagnosed by the team are the ones she was suffering from previously.”

The doctors on Saturday ran tests on her and also suggested some new treatment for her, the BSMMU told the journalists.

“If she thinks she wants to come to this hospital then we are fully prepared to receive and treat her,” he said.

Earlier around 10:00am, the five-member medical team held a meeting and later submitted a report to the BSMMU director.

Khaleda was sent to the old central jail after she was jailed for five years on February 8 in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The home minister then said her personal physicians would be included in the five-member team but it did not include any of Khaleda’s personal doctors, the BNP has been expressing concerns over her treatment.

On Friday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed said the party leaders submitted names of five doctors who they thought should be included in the team.

He accused the doctors in the new team of being politically biased and some of them would contest in the next general election with Awami League tickets.
