Syeda Manisa Kabir, Employment Specialist, Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources, University of Toronto : Firstly, I’m not a food critique and no way have a qualification to evaluate any part of food industry. I’m merely a Foodaholic, which is a newly born term, that essentially means a person who is addicted to food and thinks about it too much. I would like to think myself as a Foodaholic, because, I have always been keen in trying out new restaurants or foods wherever I travelled or lived. Apart from being one of our most basic needs, food is something where you can use your all 5 senses, taste, sight, touch, smell, and sound.
A combination of these senses enables you, to evaluate a food and this has always made me more intrigued about them.
In the last few years, we have experienced a massive change in the restaurant industry in Dhaka. In this city there are restaurants with amazing food that you might not find in other parts of the world. One of the important reasons, behind this is because, this industry is the major source of entertainment for the people of Dhaka city, which led the investors to open the doors of some amazing food palates.
Even though I currently live in Toronto, I do travel to Dhaka every now and then to see my family and friends. And each time I visit there, I am awestruck by the new options, along with the ambiance and innovativeness of these restaurants and their foods. Some of them are very elite and comes with excellent choices of dishes and services. The standard of people became so high that the owners have to come up with new strategic ideas in order to keep up with the competition. I still tell my friends, I had a hard time to find a good Beef Bulgogi (Korean dish) in Toronto as good as the one I once tried in a restaurant in Dhaka.
Even though this industry came a long way, but there are many areas where it needs improvement, especially in health and safety. Many restaurant owners are still not practicing proper hygiene standards in order to serve good food, for which many people are suffering. Given various international development in the past years, many expatriates are visiting Dhaka, which has led this industry to enhance even more. Hence, proper authority should take the responsibility so that, this industry can flourish more in the upcoming years.
