On August 21, 1986 a strange and deadly natural disaster caused the death of about 1,746 people in one night. Located in the Northwest Region of Camerron, Africa, this river carries a tale of great danger.
Tales have that an evil spirit used to emerge from the river and take away all the lives that live around it. And this posed real threat.
Nearly about 400 years ago, Lake Nyos was formed on crater of volcano. Crater lakes commonly have high levels of CO2 as they are formed by the volcanic activity happening miles beneath them.
On August 21, some 1.2 cubic kilometers of CO2 was released in roughly 20 seconds. This massive wave of deadly gas swept over the countryside. Villages near the lake had almost no chance of survival, and in nearby Nyos only six out of 800 survived.
