New transport law to be placed in House today

Desk Report: The proposed Road Transport Act 2018 will be placed before the parliament today, reports The Daily Star.
Earlier in the day, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the proposed act would be placed before the House on Sunday.
Hours after the announcement of the minister, the ministry’s Senior Information Officer Md Abu Naser told The Daily Star that the ministry has revised the plan and as per the new decision the proposed act will be placed tomorrow.
However, Quader, speaking to reporters after the board meeting of Dhaka Road Transport Coordination Authority’s office at Nagar Bhaban this morning, hoped that the proposed law will be sent to a parliamentary committee and consequently passed in the last session of parliament in October.
The new law, as drafted, proposes a maximum punishment of five years’ imprisonment for causing death to a person by reckless driving.
