Demolish unplanned structures at Hatirjheel in 7 days: HC

Kabir Humayun: The High Court yesterday directed the government to demolish the structures built beyond the layout plan in the capital’s Hatirjheel-Begunbari project within next seven days.
The court also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to protect the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project as per the layout plan.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order and rule responding to public interest litigation.
A writ petition was filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) challenging the legality of the constructed structures beyond the layout plan in the project.
Petitioner’s counsel Advocate Monjil Morshed told the HC that some structures, including restaurants, have been built in the project illegally beyond the layout plan.
He also told the apex court that those structures have been creating obstruction to the free movement of people in the project area and have damaged the beauty of the project.
The lawyer prayed to the court to pass a necessary order to protect the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project.
