Music is a sort of universal language. However, the liking of any piece of music is purely subjective. A casual listener can prefer a certain genre of music or various genres of music at the same time, but over the years, certain people have come up and become like banner-men for their preferred genre of music. They live and breathe this specific genre and each of these people has certain characteristics that are rather common throughout the demographic.

    1. The K-pop Aficionado: For those of you who are unfamiliar with the word “K-pop”, it is an abbreviation for “Korean Pop.” K-pop is a growing trend amongst the younger generations these days and while some people would brush off the whole thing by saying, it was “weird” or “I have no idea what’s going on” when watching their music videos, the people who do get in to it do get in whole-heartedly. The slightest mention of a popular K-pop star would have them squealing like 13 year old fan girls or fan boys regardless of their age. Most of these people living outside Korea have no idea what exactly their beloved songs are about since they cannot understand Korean. K-pop in itself is best described as “glamorous” and if that is enough for these people, then so be it!

    2. The Wannabe Rapper: Rap music has its own passionate group of followers. These people are all about the life in the “hood.” Except, most of these people have never been to the “hood,” let alone lived in it. A few minutes of conversation with them and they will start telling you about their “sick rhymes.” Their fashion sense is usually centered on the baggy clothes and the “bling.” These people tend to see the materialism behind rap music, not the strong messages that are conveyed through them.

    3. Metal Elitists:
These people believe that everything besides Metal music is not only inferior, but that it is not even worth listening. They spend most of their time bashing other genres of music and getting a kick out of it. In fact, when these people are not spending their time “moshing” at a concert, they are usually on random music related forums insulting other genres of music.

    4. Prog Snobs:
These people are the appreciators of the “Progressive Rock” genre. They are a lot similar to the Metal Elitists in that they are a type of elitists themselves. They will bash anything and everything that is not “progressive enough.” Not even metal music can escape the clutches of their criticism. In fact, the very popular band “Slayer” is the topic to many of these people’s jokes. If one has the pleasure or discontent of meeting a Prog Snob, it is very important that one does not say the following: “4/4 is good.”
