Abu Hayat Mahmud: Speakers at a program have termed both climate change and development as great challenges for developing countries like Bangladesh.
They came up with the findings at a discussion organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) regarding its 25th anniversary ceremony at Lake Shore Hotel in the capital yesterday.
“We need to reduce emissions aimed to rich countries, slow –emotions in developing countries investment-approach to address both climate change and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG),” said Prof. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Distinguished Member of the Council of Eminent Persons in Malaysia.
Jomo presented the keynote titled ‘Assessing the challenges of SDG implementation’.
Terming Bangladesh’s population as resources, he questioned why the country’s policymakers are not investing in environmentally friendly projects. He also warned that climate change and development issues are the important matters in Bangladesh and India, while investments must be front loaded, given danger of lock-in and importance of scale and learning economies for technology leapfrogging.
“Public investment top crowd in private investment to sustain new development pathway,” he added.
Rehman Sobhan, eminent economist and chairman of CPD, said that setting specific goals in the perspective of Bangladesh to identify groups and actions through collaboration within public- private and NGO sectors.
He advised that people of every level should be united to implement SDG and tackle the challenges of food, poverty and climate change.
The program was moderated by Prof Mustafizur Rahman. Also present were Dr Atiq Rahman, a prominent environmentalist, scientist, development expert; Eminent Economist Debapriya Bhattacharya, DrSyeda Rawnak Jahan, Barrister Sarah Hossain and others were also present.
