Thai fishermen protest climate change as UN climate talks stumble

Nahian Arefin: Thai fishermen & laborers, threatened by rising sea levels, kicked off a protest in Bangkok on yesterday in front of the United Nations (UN) regional head quarter.
Because of worsening climate change, protestors wanted proper steps in control the deteriorating situation. They protested with banners to grab the attention of the delegates who congregated there to attend a meeting titled ‘Rise for Climate’.
A fisherwoman named Aree Kongklad told AFP, “I came here today to ask the government to put coastal erosion on the national agenda.” She also said that the mangrove forest had been destroyed and endangered the supply of crabs by which maintained her livelihood.
In Bangkok, about 200 protesters united in front of UN regional headquarter where delegates discussed about implementing measures agreed by world powers under the 2015 Paris Accord on climate change.
The meeting aims to create a draft on the legal framework to limit global warming, which will be presented to ministers & heads of states at the end of the discussion, scheduled to take place in Poland in December.
The meeting will continue till Tuesday, but progress has been slow. Although leaders only attended to close the negotiations, an important issue still remains a key sticking point: how the fight against climate change will be funded and how will the funding be made available to developing nations.
