Sayeed Muhammad: Former Adviser to the caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan has stated that holding general polls freely and fairly is constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission.
At a roundtable organised by The Dhaka Forum, a think-tank, the former caretaker government’s adviser said that if the EC fails to do so, its members will have to face the music for breaching constitutional responsibility.
Hafizuddin was addressing a the event on ‘development, democracy and good governance’ at the National Press Club in Dhaka yesterday morning.
He also called for a “single-issue” movement to ensure free and fair polls as there are only three months left for the elections.
Meanwhile, Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, former governor of Bangladesh Bank and president of platform said development and democracy are required simultaneously, otherwise this development will not be sustainable.
The 11th parliamentary election is supposed to be held at the end of December next.
