Businesswoman Mahjabin gets bail

Desk Report: A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to Faria Mahjabin, owner of Nerdy Bean Coffee Haus in Dhanmondi, in a case filed over “spreading rumours on social media platforms” during the recent student movement for safe roads, reports The Daily Star.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Aminul Haque passed the order after her lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua submitted a petition seeking her bail in the case.
During the hearing, Jyotirmoy told the court that his client has been languishing in jail since August 17.
Faria Mahjabin, 28, was picked up by a Rab-2 team from her house in the capital’s Hazaribagh area around 10:45pm on Thursday, August 16.
The following day, she was shown arrested in a case filed under the controversial Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act for “spreading rumours and sharing provocative posts” on social media over the recent student protest.
A Dhaka court placed her on three-day remand in the case after she was produced before it the same day.
On August 20, Mahjabin confessed to the allegations against her before a magistrate on completion of her remand.
