Heavy rainfall triggers flash floods, brings storms in parts of China

Wio News: Despite being a relief to recent searing hot days, Tuesday’s heavy rains sweeping across much of China have also triggered floods and mudslides in many regions.
The heavy rainfall in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality developed into a rainstorm on Tuesday afternoon.
Video footage shot by a local resident’s cell phone showed that the storm blew away the rooftop of a makeshift dormitory at a construction site.
In another amateur footage, a car was caught on camera trying to drive through a flooded street but ended up getting stuck in floodwater.
The rainfall triggered a flash flood and mudslide that trapped eight people, most of whom are women and children, at a scenic spot on the Wutai Mountain in north China’s Shanxi Province.
The local fire department dispatched 18 firefighters with two fire engines to rescue the trapped people.
Arriving at the scene, the firefighters had to wade in torrents of water to reach the trapped people as the road was blocked by gravels and slushes washed down by the flood from a nearby hill.
The firefighters brought all the eight people to safety and removed the debris from the road with the assistance of local police officers.
The meteorological department of Yulin City in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province upgraded its heavy rain alert from yellow to red early on Wednesday morning.
The downpour dumped up to 100 millimetres of rainwater in the city overnight.
Rain-triggered flood sweeping through a downtown intersection in the province’s Shenmu City reached waist deep as of Tuesday night, submerging two sedans with three people trapped inside.
Rushing to the intersection, local firefighters used a safety line to bring the trapped people to safety.
