Dengue patients on rise

    Desk Report: The number of patients suffering from dengue fever sees an increase in Rangamati General Hospital since its first detection in the district town a few months ago.
    In April, three people were admitted to Rangamati General Hospital with dengue fever. The number was 12 in May, 23 in June and 22 in July.
    Many other dengue patients are receiving treatment at home.
    “After detection of dengue through blood tests I was admitted to Rangamati General Hospital a few days ago. The doctor advised me to remain in rest for some more days,” said Bitu Chakma, a resident of College Gate area in the town.
    Anukul Chakma was also admitted to the hospital as he suffered from fever with symptoms of dengue. There blood tests confirmed that he was affected by the disease.
    Shahid Talukder, civil surgeon of Rangamati, said they are keeping regular watch on the situation and conducting awareness programmes including distribution of leaflets for prevention and cure of dengue in the district.

    “Everyone needs to be aware to prevent dengue. Insecticides should be sprayed on mosquito breeding places. We have arranged meetings with all doctors of ten upazilas in the district. Now nine medical teams are working on it. We have instructed all clinics and upazila health complexes to refer the dengue patients to Rangamati Medical College Hospital and Rangamati General Hospital,” the civil surgeon said.

    Akbar Hossain Chowdhury, mayor of Rangamati municipality, said the municipality workers are spraying insecticides for the destruction of mosquito breeding grounds.

    “We are working jointly with the civil surgeon’s office for prevention of dengue in the municipal areas,” he said.
