DMP takes tough line on traffic violators

Abrar Hussain: Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has ‘promised’ that the police will take a ‘tough line’ on traffic violators and strengthen punishments for offences.
The traffic rules will be implemented and an amendment to the existing road transport law will bring harsher punishments to the errant drivers, the DMP chief said at a press conference yesterday, reports UNB.

A Road Safety Council and an advisory council will be formed to oversee traffic issues, he added.

“We will take firm action against any vehicles without a fitness license and any other violations of the traffic law, including driving with helpers. We will also act against three or more people riding on a single motorcycle, traffic signal violations and moving down the wrong side of the road.”

Mia said the investigation into the deaths of two Dhaka college students in a bus accident, which had triggered a mass protest for road safety in Dhaka, was also proceeding. Four people, including the owner of Jabale Noor Paribahan, had been arrested in connection with the case, he said.

The licence of the vehicle has also been dismissed, he added.
