Jamaat’s candidacy in Sylhet polls won’t hamper ties: BNP

M Humayun Kabir: BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed yesterday said Jamaat-e-Islami’s participation in the Sylhet mayoral polls would not hamper the political alliance between BNP and Jamaat.  He came up with the remark while addressing a discussion at National Press Club in the capital yesterday, reports The New Age.
The BNP senior leader alleged that the government was hatching conspiracy to harm the relation between the allied parties, spreading rumors over the candidacy of Jamaat in the Sylhet mayoral polls. Moudud said, ‘Our ally will sustain and the candidacy of Jamaat will not hamper our ally.’
‘We are trying to resolve the matter between us, but the government is trying to gain from it,’ he alleged, adding, ‘The government is spreading rumors about it,’ he alleged. The Sylhet mayoral polls is scheduled to be held on July 30, where BNP and Jamaat are participating, an unlike precedence of the parties to provide single candidate endorsed by the alliance.
Moudud also strongly condemned the government for the reported gold scam in the Bangladesh Bank’s vault saying the people blessed with the government patronage stole the gold from the bank.
