Abrar Hussain: US President Donald Trump reportedly plans to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to Washington this autumn, according to a White House statement on Thursday, four days after a summit between the two leaders in which Trump received public backlash for failure to confront Putin regarding Moscow’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
In a Twitter post, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders claimed that Trump had directed national security adviser John Bolton to issue the invitation, despite lawmakers and top officials in Trump’s administration not having been briefed on the topics of Monday’s summit. Putin’s last official visit to the United States was in July 2007, when he spent two days at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. Both Trump and Putin had praised their first meeting as a success and blamed forces in the United States for trying to belittle its achievements. Despite the week’s furor, Trump also said he was looking forward to his second meeting with the Russian leader. -Source: ABS CBN
