Wali-ur Rahman, Former Ambassador and International Relations Analyst: The meeting of Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump can be called historic in the sense that the two country leaders have met for the first time. Before this, there has been no meeting in such a difficult situation. Now why it is getting a global importance can be a question. The answer to that is North Korea has over a hundred nuclear plants. This is the hugest position in the world’s biggest strategic relationship. Just months ago, we has the idea of a 3rd World War from the cross-words between the two leaders. The way they were threatening each other showing off their nuclear missiles, speculation of another World War was quite normal. A summit between them in such a situation is quite dramatic.
Practically, the summit is empty of any essence. There were no need of such a summit if North Korea would be going for a slow denuclearization. In most ways, North Korea is the gainer. And why did Trump go for this summit then? This is because he has his eyes on the upcoming presidential election.
Trump is trying to establish some signatures of his capabilities so the FBI drops the cases going against him. He is trying to give a message to the special security agencies that he is powerful. He has done things that no one else could’ve done before.
He is trying scam the American voters once again in his effort to prove him not guilty from the slanders against him. None of these has base, he is doing the same that every American president has done before. He was not able to do anything and special.
