Sofian Khan: The new six dozen prospective parties pledge to register are mostly to be rejected by the Election Commission (EC) in the coming parliamentary election , said some EC officials. “It seems that the conditions for registering new parties have been difficult to meet,” Helaluddin Ahmed, EC Secretary said.
“Some of the parties have only one leader, others do not have an office, some do not have a party constitution.”
In 2008, a total of 38 political parties were registered with the implementation of the new system. More two were added before the ninth and two more before the tenth parliamentary elections began. But then were cancelled as they failed to fulfil the necessary criterias.
For the coming elections, a total of 76 parties applied for registration of which, 19 were rejected. Eight others were rejected after they failed to submit the necessary documents to the EC.
“Most of the parties did not have the correct documents,” an EC deputy secretary told bdnews24.com. “I could not recommend any of the parties that I examined for registration.”
“Our work is done,” EC Deputy Secretary Abdul Halim Khan, who is in charge of the registration work. “The relevant parties will be informed once we receive the approval of the commission.”
