Raj Abrar: The United States yesterday emphasized the importance of holding “free, fair and participatory election” in Bangladesh that “truly reflects the will of Bangladeshi people”.
“Bangladesh and the US are indeed friends. This friendship is based on shared values and willing to talk to each other openly and honestly,” USAID Administrator Mark Green told a roundtable with a select group of journalists at American Club in the capital, reports UNB.He said that responsive democratic governance is an irreparable ingredient in the long-term sustainability and successful economic development.
Green also voiced concerns over the ongoing arrests of opposition leaders, extrajudicial harassment and detention of journalists. “That concerns every true friend of Bangladesh, including US.”
He highlighted the importance of preserving the rights of free speech and assembly, as well as a free and independent press, before, during, and after the upcoming national voting later this year.
