Sayeed Muhammad: In a latest reaction, the US has expressed its disappointment over purported irregularities and intimidation in Khulna City Corporation polls held on Tuesday. It, however, congratulated all the parties for making the elections inclusive.
US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat made the observation yesterday, but termed the election very encouraging that a wide range of political parties participated in the polls.
“I congratulate everyone,” she said while speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after her hour-long meeting with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.Expressing disappointment over the reported irregularities, the US envoy insisted on transparent investigation into the reported irregularities and intimidation, are “very disappointing”.Bernicat encouraged all parties to remain within the limits of law in the future elections as promised. In another development, the UN at its regular briefing on Tuesday reiterated its call for holding free and fair elections in Bangladesh.In the Khulna city polls, Awami League-nominated mayor candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque registered a win with a big margin.But, BNP rejected the polls result, alleging that the KCC elections were marred by irregularities, including ballot stuffing and driving out polling agents of the rival group.
