Sayeed Muhammad: In a deadly carnage in the hill tracts yesterday, unknown miscreants shot five people to death and injured six others as the latter they were on the way to attend the funeral of Rangamati’s Naniarchar upazila chairman Shaktimaan Chakma. The deceased are UPDF Ganatantrik President Tapan Jyoti Chakma, well known as Barma, 52, Sujon Chakma, 30, a central leader of Jubo Front, the youth organization allied with UPDF Ganatantrik, Tanay Chakma, 31, a local leader of Jubo Front, Setu Lal Chakma, a supporter, and microbus driver Md Sajib. “The assailants opened fire indiscriminately at a microbus by which the victims were travelling to Naniarchar” said Md Jahangir Alam, assistant superintendent of police (sadar circle) in Rangamati, reports The Daily Star.All the five ill-fated died on the spot during the attack at Betchhari area around 12noon, Jahangir added, confirming that the victims were going to join the funeral in Naniarchar upazila from Khagrachhari district. The injured people were first rushed to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital and for out of them were later sent to Chattagram for better medical attention. The incident took place just a day after Shaktimaan Chakma, the vice president of Parbattya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samity’s MN Larma faction, was killed in a gun attack. Shaktimaan was shot dead by unidentified assailants on his way to work around 11am on Thursday. His funeral took place at Naniarchar around 12:30pm today.Bivuranjan Chakma, political secretary of PCJSS (MN Larma), held UPDF responsible for the attack. Shaktimaan and Tapan were among the 19 people accused in a case filed over the abduction of Monty Chakma and Doyasona Chakma, two Hill Women’s Federation leaders. Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmed Khan said the five corpses were sent to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
