Indigenous people want 5% quota allocation in govt job

    Sayeed Muhammad: A group of indigenous people yesterday demanded that 5% allocation of quota privileges in government job recruitment system be kept. Appreciating the prime minister’s move to scrap the quota system, they urged her to keep their five-point demand in mind while planning for the next course of action, reports The Daily Star. Following country-wide demonstrations by the general students on April 11, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decided to scrap the quota system in government job recruitment. The premier, however, said a different arrangement will be made so members of ethnic minorities and physically-challenged people be employed in public service.The group of indigenous people made the call under the banner of “Bangladesh er Khudro Nrigoshtir Jonogon” from a human chain formed in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka. In case of the higher education, the government also should keep the 5% quota in enrollment in the public and private universities, the platform’s leaders insisted.“We also want the five percent quota allocation in recruiting system of private organisations including banks and insurance companies,” Ajay Prokash, convener of the indigenous group. The new to be formed following the PM’s recent declaration should have representatives from the indigenous people, he suggested.
