Md. Fakrul Islam Chowdhury writes for DOT :
In order to transform Dhaka into a smart city we need to start a conversation around the following issues between not only the experts and government officials but also be inclusive enough to accommodate and address the voices and concerns of people and stakeholders from all walks of the life.
It will ultimately come down to the elected representatives, as we are living in a democratic country to decide the ways in which we’d like to transform our city into a smart one to raise the standard of living for all citizens in a sustainable, eco-friendly, equitable, secure, fair, democratic ,accountable and transparent environment.
Our conversations must include but may not be limited to the followings:
Transportation and Mobility:
The role and nature of autonomous vehicles, parking, traffic control, public transportation, and road design.
Smart Infrastructure:
By carefully designing and implementing water supply, waste management, urban agriculture, and smart planning, we must figure out the ways we would like to design our Communities.
Smart Energy:
Renewable and clean energy sources, decentralized distribution, micro-grids, and energy efficient technologies must be at the center of our design of energy and power infrastructure and distribution systems.
Governance: What will be the priority governance issues in a Smart City?
How would smart technologies have positive and/or adverse impacts on our privacy, security, education, open data, and policing issues? How can we ensure, accountability, fairness and transparency in governance in dealing with these issues in a smart city context? How would we negotiate smart contracts between governments, corporates and citizens in ways that would protect everyone’s interest as well as the rights of the citizens?
Smart Living: What impact would a smart city have in the future of healthcare, smart buildings, consumer technology, and smart entertainment? How would our everyday living change?
The Election Process: As demands to use of EVMs gathering pace in the upcoming Dhaka City North City Corporation Election, it’s about time we start a conversation on the future of voting/ electoral system in a rapidly evolving smart city in progress like Dhaka.
