DOT Desk: The farmers of Saturia Upazila in the district are frustrated over price fall of brinjal this season, reports The New Age.
Farmers said they got bumper yield of brinjal this year due to fertile soil and favourable weather. After meeting local demand, the brinjal is being sent to other districts.
Farmers alleged that the wholesalers buy brinjal at low price from them and sell those in Dhaka at high price.
It was learnt that the farmers gave up cultivation of other crops and have been cultivating brinjal for last several years as they got good yield and fair price. It costs Taka 15,000 to 30,000 for cultivating brinjal in per bigha of land. If the yield is good, the farmers can earn Taka 70,000 to 90,000 selling brinjal of one bigha land. But this year the farmers are not getting more than Taka 40,000 to 50,000.
While visiting a brinjal market at Char Tilli Bazaar under Tilli Union of the upazila, it was found that the local farmers are selling the produce at low price to the wholesalers. There are about 20 wholesalers in this market who buy brinjal from the farmers and sell those in Dhaka. In this market, per kilogram brinjal was selling at Taka 6 to 8.
