Twins fly to Hungary to be separated

Banglanews24: The conjoined twins Rokeya and Rabeya will be taken to Hungary on Friday night (January 4) for better treatment with assistance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim handed over the air tickets to their parents at a press briefing held at burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Friday noon. The twins are joined at the head since birth.
“Twins have been receiving treatment at burn unit under plastic and neuro surgeons for long two years,” said Dr Samanta Lal Sen, national coordinator at the DMCH’s burn unit. Samanta Lal Sen said, ‘Two phases of treatment have been completed in Bangladesh. Now, they’re being sent to Hungary for the third phase. Five specialist teams will supervise their treatment there. Approximately, treatment will take 3-4 months.”
“The skull of their head will be made inflated and somewhat hollow through injection. Then, final surgery will be done in Bangladesh,” Samanta Lal Sen also said.
Success rate in such cases is below 20%. However, we’re hopeful. We will perform the operation to separate them at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn And Plastic Surgery 6 months later, said Abul Kalam.
