Situated along near the Dhaka-Tarakandi Highway near Gopalpur upazila is the Muktijoddha Nyapara Government Primary School. Almost a hundred students – all of them children of the farmers living in the river eroded region – study in this institution situated roughly 20km west from the upazila sadar.
The 30-year-old school building is currently decrepit: the walls and ceilings are unstable, the floors cracked and rusted. Occasional bricks, rods and plaster fall down from the ceiling and rain down into classrooms, which have led to many a student and teacher being harmed at the concern of parents.
However, like boils on a back, several jute and sand sellers have illegally set up shop on school grounds. Three local influential people named Anisur, Altaf and Jaj Khan are thought to be responsible for this illegal sand trade. Everyday boats and trawlers traffic to and fro from this location, hampering schoolchildren’s studies; not to mention the pollution having irreversibly harmful impact on their health.
Sources have confirmed that the situation has been notified to the administrators and the order to shut down the jute trade has already been given, with authorities pledging that action will soon be taken against those responsible.
