M Humayun Kabir: The government is thinking about introducing tuition-free schooling for children from primary levels up to junior school level – class VIII.
Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman disclosed the government’s plan while speaking to reporters at a press conference arranged for the occasion of International Literacy Day 2018 held at his ministry office at Bangladesh Secretariat yesterday.
The matter has been placed before the cabinet for primary consideration, said the minister, reports The Daily Star.
“Education up to class VIII should be mandatory and free for all. This issue has been forwarded to the cabinet for primary consideration,” he said.
Mostafizur Rahman also informed reporters that the current literacy rate in Bangladesh is 72.9 per cent, which has risen from last year’s rate of 72.3 per cent.
