Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor, Dept. of English, Dhaka University : We hope for a good electoral environment. We do not want violence to recur. A good democratic practice calls for an inclusive election where all can participate in. Elections should transparent. The more political parties take part in the polls, the better.
The Election Commission has not given registration to many political parties. It does not seem positive to me. For instance, Junayed Saki’s Gono Sanghoti Andolon has not been given registration despite fulfilling all conditions set by the EC. I think there is a necessity to hold a dialogue over these issues. The EC should sit with the political parties. The commission should leveled the electoral field gradually so that parties like Gono Sanghoti Andolon could take part in the polls.hold talks with an open mind. However, we are not certain yet whether there will be a dialogue. We can only see a ray of hope. Let the dialogue be initiated then we will able to say whether it will be successful. We can only express our optimism for a dialogue. Many problems will be solved if the two major political parties sit together. Bloodshed and violence can be averted through holding a dialogue.
Our present economic condition necessitates stability. The economy of Bangladesh will be strengthened in the days to come. But stability is a prerequisite for strong economy. A good dialogue is badly needed for the country’s stability and bright image abroad. Hold a dialogue first, and then the participants will decide themselves what will be the agenda.
