Gas supply to households must come under prepaid metering system

Abdul Aziz Khan, Member, BERC: The demand-supply imbalance is the main reason for gas crisis in the domestic sector. There is no scope of gas supply rationing here like industry, CNG and other sectors.
Diminishing, Mohammadpur and Mirpur areas have huge crisis. The problem is very acute in Manikganj.Under ADB supported Clean Fuel Project, 16-Inch and 20-inch feed mains were constructed for expanding capacity distribution network in 2003-2004.
But conversion of single story buildings to multi-storied apartments all over Dhaka city has increased the demand in geometric progression. But the present network can still meet the growing demand. But reduced supply and increased demand has led to the present crisis. The gas supply crisis over the entire gas grid would continue till injection of RLNG in the gas grid.
In response to a question, he said India is supplying pipeline gas – RLNG to domestic consumers. Bangladesh can also do that. New connections for supplying pipeline gas supply to domestic consumers should recommence soon. But before that the government must do away with flat rate. All consumers must use metered gas. Domestic users would have to buy gas at cost price. I believe it would be a better option than LPG.
