Sabah Mannan: As Trump settles in for a summit with North Korea in Singapore today, the president has taken more swipes at Canada and its Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over trade issues.
In a series of tweets yesterday, Trump wrote that “Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not reciprocal.” The US President also took aim at Germany in a 200 worded multi-tweet.
By agreeing to a group statement on trade only to withdraw from it later while flying to Singapore, Trump roiled the weekend Group of Seven meeting in Canada. He further added that he had been blindsided by Trudeau’s criticism of his tariff threats. However, the attack on Canada being US’s longtime ally drew sharp criticism. Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel commented she found Trump’s tweets disavowing to the G-7 and the European Union would act against the US trade measures.
