Myanmar jails policeman who testified Reuters reporters were framed

    Afrida Ahmed: A police spokesman told Reuters on Sunday that the Myanmar policeman who testified in favor of Reuters journalists has been sentenced to a secret prison term for breaking Myanmar’s Police Disciplinary Act.A senior officer had ordered police to trap one of the two journalists arrested in December, Moe Yan Naing told the court on 20 April. He informed that the officers had been ordered to meet reporter Wa Lone at a restaurant in Yangon and give him secret papers.Since January the court in Yangon has been postponing hearings to decide whether Wa Lone, 32, along with his Reuters colleague Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, will be charged under the colonial-era Official Secrets Act which carries a punishment of 14 years in prison.A police spokesman Colonel Myo Thu Soe told Reuters on Sunday that Moe Yan Naing had been punished according to police disciplinary act, his case has been finalized and he has been sent to prison to complete the punishment. Myo Thu Soe refused to answer to several questions about the length of the sentence and regarding the specific section of the law under which Moe Yan Naing was sentenced. Moe Yan Naing’s wife and children were expelled from their home in police housing in Naypyitaw after he gave his testimony in the court.
