We will be lying if we say we don’t care about what people say about us, do they think well of us? Do they talk behind my back? Will they help me out if I ask them to? We live in a society so getting at least a minimal approval from people is necessary. There are a few tricks to get people to like you.
Like-Minded:
We need to understand that people instantly like similar minded people. They also like people who share their sense of fashion or lifestyle etc. there is a saying that opposites click the most but when comes the question of instant likability, similar minded people have the advantage. Researchers have found that we help people who dress more like us. So if someone wearing same outfit as you, for example: jeans and t-shirts asks for a help or for a treat you will be more interested in helping him than a man in business suit.

So how can we use this similarity attraction effect to be more favored by people or to be more likable? One easy way is to highlight your similarities but you want to make sure the method is authentic. There are a few steps to follow in this regard. Step one would be searching for similarities. At first meeting you should show interest in the other person you are talking to. You want to find out about their interests, values and personality. Do both of you like Chinese food; is he a foodie like you; do you have same taste in music? All these can get you closer to the person you are conversing with. Orient your first few conversational topics to find out about the mutual likes and dislikes.
Highlight Likings:
Next step is capitalizing the similarities. In other words, make them know you have that similarity with them, for example if you get to know they also think cilantro tastes like soap, join in with them to double down on the criticism and say yes, cilantro is a food killer and that you are totally on the same page with them. You should also celebrate your similarities. If you know they like the same band as you, do ‘High-Five’, this will make them remember you better.
Extend Similarities:
Lastly you want to extend the similarities you both have. For example, if they like soccer or cricket ask if they have ever played them or ask if they like hiking ask about their favorite hiking trail and later ask them on a hiking date if you like. This will enhance the interaction and give you opportunity for spending more time together. If you just talk through the party and later on don’t get in touch with them any more this time that you spent together will just be a waste as you still haven’t made someone to talk to or like you in the long run. So the bottom line is, find similarities and value them because we like people who are more like us.
