There are ways to know if someone is lying to you. The author of ‘Human Lie Detection and Body Language 101’, Venessa Van Edwards has revealed some techniques in this regard.
Baseline:
When you want to identify if a person is lying or not, you have to have a baseline about them. You have to know what they do, what they look like when telling the truth because as per studies, everyone looks differently when lying. For example, on your first meeting with a person, ask them normal questions like about the weather etc which they have no reason to lie to. By this you know how they look like when they are being truthful.
Hot Spots:
Step two would be looking for hot spots. Liars usually focus on their verbal contents while lying but often forget about the body leakages. For example if you ask someone of their previous job experience you might see him rubbing fingers on the forehead while answering. This is a gesture people make when they are nervous or shameful about something. If a person does one sided shoulder-shrug, it means he/she doesn’t believe in what they are saying. For instance, you might encounter this gesture asking them if they are okay and that would mean the person is in doubt. Another important hotspot would be hands; when you ask someone about their salary, you would notice they are clutching their chairs or scratching ears. You might also want to look into their eyes or notice if they suddenly rub the back of their neck to detect lies.
Clusters:
Next what you look for is, clusters. If you see more than one symptoms or hotspots of lying for example, if they clutch the chairs or wrinkle their lips or rub the forehead, all at once, you have to consider that person to be less trustworthy and more of a liar. To detect the lie, your intuition can go a long way. An easy way to practise lie-detecting is to watch reality shows or interviews, that way you can clearly see their signs or clusters as the guests talk. So it is also quite humorous as you instantly can detect someone’s lie on screen.
Nervousness and Lie:
There are cases where people are just nervous and they show these symptoms unknowingly without the intention of lying.
In this case, that person in the onset of the conversation should clear out that he is a bit nervous to keep away misunderstanding.
There is a myth that liars don’t look in the eye when lying because liars actually want to look into your eyes so you don’t suspect them of lying.
