Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner of DMP and head of its Counter Terrorism Unit informed the media of illegal arms import during a press conference on Wednesday. He said, “The three armed men who were arrested from Bangshal, Dhaka on Wednesday, were basically trying to use these arms to dominate the Union Council Polls. They gave this information to the police after primary questioning.”
Monirul Islam also disclosed, “Dabir Uddin Tuhin, Abdul Hamid and Efranul Pias were caught red handed by two teams of the DB Police and Counter Terrorism Unit. They were selling and buying arms at the Yousuf market of Yousuf Road. They had 6 foreign arms, 10 magazines and 20 rounds of bullets.”
After the culprits were questioned, they informed the police that they have been trading fire-arms for a long time. They used to smuggle weaponry from India via Chapai Nawabganj. Pias came to Dhaka on Wednesday to buy guns. He bid 60,000 taka for each of the 6 arms. His intention was to sell them in Comilla and Chittagong for 75,000-80,000 apiece. There was a demand of firearms with the UC polls being held. These weapons would have been used to influence the polls.
