23 people have died in Brussels after the three separate explosions rung through the city. In addition to that, dozens of people have been injured during the attacks.
The attacks were carried out in Brussels Airport and the Mallbeek Metro Station in Brussels. There were two separate blasts in the Brussels airport, followed by another explosion in the Mallbeek Metro Station.
It is suspected that one of the airport bombings had been carried out by a suicide bomber who shouted in Arabic right before detonating the bomb, according to the Belgian newspaper Benga.
This attack might be in retaliation to the capture of the Paris attack suspect. Belgium has undertaken added security measures ever since the attack in Paris and has launched several operations in attempts to capture Salah Abdeslam, who was the captured suspect.
All Belgian airports and public transport systems have been temporarily shut down while the police conduct sweeps in order to prevent any other incidents. The Mallbeek Metro Station is located near several European Union buildings, which have been put on high alert since the bombings. They were put on alert level orange following the attacks and all the people inside were evacuated. The news of these bombings have sent ripples through the world as European governments increase their security in hopes of preventing terrorist attacks. In addition, airports across Europe have been put on high alert with a high presence of police around them. Stock prices in Europe have also gone down in reaction to this, especially travel, airline and hotel stocks.
Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium has announced that the Belgian government has been monitoring the situation “minute by minute” and the safety of the bystanders and the passengers is the primary concern for them. According to Belgium’s Interior Minister, the country was on high alert following the arrest of the Paris attack suspect.
Although there have not been any claims taking responsibility of this attack, it is suspected that these were part of the attacks conducted by Islamic State.
