If you consider yourself as a narcissist and looking out to make new friends, you should be really looking for people of your kind: other narcissists. It is easy to get along with self-obsessed people like you since you yourself are self-obsessed and fail to really notice that. So it all works out well eventually, right?
In a recent study published Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers from Germany took 290 pairs of best friends and asked them take test for personality traits, including good ones like amicability and less positive things like narcissism. Overall, it was found out that best friends actually have traits very different from each other, except when it comes to narcissists. The researchers in Germany also found that the people with narcissistic trends who were friends, their personalities were likely to be similar in other ways too. The study authors wrote, “There is evidence that narcissists are even more tolerant of others ‘narcissistic traits (e.g., bossy aggressive, arrogant, selfish) when they possess these characteristics themselves,” So basically, when they seek out for friends, they look for a similar version of themselves.
Therefore, scoring high in personality assessment test is not a bad thing, and neither is it considered as having a personality disorder. And if you do tend to have friends similar to you or possessing many traits similar to you, you might be more narcissistic than you thought, who knows!
