It’s great to be back after a long time. And that too, on a special day.
International Women’s day is being observed today throughout the world. And this year the theme is Pledge for Parity. The day will be marked celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.
It also points out the slow progress and how an immediate response is needed to tackle the situation.
Leaders across the world are pledging to take action as champions of gender parity.
I, as a feminist journalist, believe that rights and reserves should be equal for men and women. It’s high time that women should come out of the blanket of oppression and
stand up for themselves. They should come
together as a union and fight for their rights. The women should act on the fact that their
ontribution is as equally important as men.
I have had my share of facing the odds and obstructions while growing up to be an independent woman. Choosing not to give up has always been my rescue. And like every other child or teenager who has a comic role model, I always looked up to Wonder Woman as my Super heroine.
Wonder Woman is a fictional Superhero from DC comics. She is known as Princess Diana of Themyscira at her homeland and as “Diana prince” outside. Wonder
Woman possesses a number of superhuman powers which include superior combat and battle skills. She possesses an arsenal of weapons, including the Lasso of Truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara which serves as a projectile, and (in older stories) a range of devices based on
Amazon technology.
The character of Wonder Woman first appeared in All Star Comics in December 1941. And then in Sensation in 1942. Her character portrays her thirst for love, peace,
justice and gender equality has made her a famous feminist icon.
Initially, her character was introduced during the World War II illustrating her as fighting the Axis military. However, in later times, her character was emphasized on characters, deities and monsters of Greek mythology.
The enemies that she fought over the decades were the Amazon, including classic villains such as Ares, Cheetah, Circe, Doctor Psycho, and Giganta, along with more recent adversaries such as the First Born.She has continued to appear at a stretch except for a brief break in 1986.
The reason I decided to
write this feature on her is the fact that despite being a woman who is Superhero in a notably man’s world was herself created by a man. American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marstonand drawn by H. G. Peter. The character he made was inspired by the two women of his life – his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne (who lived with the couple in an extended relationship).
Both the women influenced the making of Wonder Woman greatly.
In a recent development, Wonder Woman has appeared in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 that marks the debut of the character after almost 70 years of its creation. Also a film is being made on the character’s first solo live-action film Wonder Woman, schedule to be released on June 23, 2017. Hollywood actress Gal Gadot will be acting in the role.
It can be expected that the appearance of the character will have a huge impact on the women of yesterday, today and tomorrow alike. The fact that we are limited to nothing will be portrayed through real life character.
Meanwhile, let’s be united in ups and downs. Let’s celebrate the womanhood.
