Dr. Atiar Rahman, Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank : The six-point demand was the charter of freedom of the Bangalee. Bangabandhu came up with some programmes engaging all, only to liberate the Bengalee from the economic oppression of West Pakistan. All but the military and the central bank were under the purview of the programmes that were meant for how East Pakistan can autonomously run. This was the demand of the Bangalee, ending up being the six-pint demand. The seed of our liberation was sown through the development.
The six-point demand was adopted under the leadership of Bangabandhu, for which he had to be incarcerated and sued in the Agartala conspiracy case. Many leaders of his party tried to go for compromising the issue, but Bangabandhu remained rigid on his stance. He replied in the negative, saying: “I would not move even by a little crack.”
He even won the 1971 election. The he promised his followers that the constitution of Bangladesh would be formulated based on the six-point demand. He also urged all not to step aside from the six-point demand. Such was the commitment for the six-point demand. He discussed in the six-point demand how our economy could earn freedom. Actually, the six-point demand had established the base of our liberation war movement.
