Wali-ur Rahman , Former Ambassador and Political Analyst : There have not been much scopes to discuss the level of development has been done to our polls system. Currently, the Election Commission (EC) is in an acceptable position for its strong structure and neutral role. The EC was able to prove its position once again in the recently finished polls. While the candidates were able to run propaganda campaign freely, voters were able to vote independently at the same time.
BNP, because of their negative attitude centring the polls, constantly comes up with complaints even after a fair election. The EC has already proven that it has the capability to host a free, fair and neutral selection. So there should be no doubts that it will also arrange a level-playing field in the upcoming general polls and other city elections as well.
We need to work together to strengthen our election system and to give democracy a sustainable form. We have to go through corrections of what we have made mistakes. I strongly believe that such an environment will continue in the coming days as well.
