Election Commission: Ability & Commitment
Razequzzaman Ratan, Central committee member, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal : Election Commission (EC) has held discussions with its stakeholders about how the upcoming general election can be held. They had also have dialogues with different parties, but it is unclear which one they have adopted. The EC is continuously declaring its clear and honest position to conduct the general election. I think it doesn’t depend on announcements. Rather it depends on the steps taken. We previously asked what and how the EC will play role to hold a black-money-free election? What role will it play to stop the effect of muscle power or even, the effect of religious influences? What will they do to diminish communism?
We wanted to see their general election roadmap. Their commitment to hold a fair and free election did not appear to be very visible to the people with their preparations. They indeed have held one or two city corporations polls. City corporation polls are for electing local government representatives. There are quantitative differences between local government polls and national election.
General polls are meant to handover of the state power, which is not present in local government polls.
As a result, we think that, on the eve of the national election, the EC doesn’t have to make certain promises to prove it has achieved that capability. It will have to show how well they prepared for the fair elections.Election Commission (EC) has held discussions with its stakeholders about how the upcoming general election can be held.
