Computer, mobile phone and Internet are essentials to Information Revolution
Dr. Forqan Uddin Ahmed, Former Deputy Director General and Commandant, Ansar VDP Academy :
In the 21st century, human civilization has reached the pinnacle of glory in science and technology. Scientists discovered the truth about atoms; man landed on the moon and man-made satellites are rocketing in the far sky and around the universe. Scientists have also discovered the secrets of life and are almost on the verge of taking the rudder of creation in their own hands. It is an age of electronics and computers and through the Internet, there has been an information revolution – the world of knowledge is now within the reach of man. Within seconds by pushing a button, people can get access to distant knowledge and information.
ICT creates a significant impact on our life. It is inevitable to all spheres of socio-economic, cultural and political activities. ICT can create an unprecedented opportunity for achieving national development goal. ICT is considered as an essential tool for poverty alleviation and use of ICT is vital for Bangladesh to fulfill health service, achieving targets of educational development and finally play a significant role to eliminate poverty. Similarly, the use of ICT can contribute to the empowerment of women. Access to information for the village destitute, under privileged, less privileged women will undoubtedly lead to the empowerment of women. ICT as socio-economic and geographical barrier overcoming agent must be utilized as the tool for total development of the country.
Computer is the new wonder of science. It can make calculations in a moment; it performs sequences. There are two types of IT: digital and analogue. The first type carries out mathematical operations with variables. They are usually electronic. Digital computers can store millions of pieces of information in its memory. Any problem which can be resolved into sequences of mathematical calculation can be dealt with by the computer. It is now used in banks, railways and offices. Air travel has become easier and safer on account of the computer. Soon it will be used at every school, institution, and house. This artificial intelligence will do all work for man. A ‘robot’ is but a computerized automatic machine.
As computer literacy spread with time, internet usage has increased. Communication networks were earlier connected to each other in a sort of a chain, somewhat like an electricity line to one’s home. This meant that if even one chain in the middle was blown up, the whole network becomes useless. The net connections are possible at each home with the computer which should be able to support through the software and must have a windows program. Today easy access to broadband internet access in cities and villages in family proportions should be ensured. The Internet should be considered as a fundamental right, because it has long-term research and financial investment in the formulation of technology. The acquisition of common people should now be increased and it will be cost effective. People can consolidate their economic position by using high-speed internet to improve their lives.
