Bangladeshi Clothing Sector Uses Excessive Amount of Water: Three Times More Than International Standard

    Hasan Arif

Bangladeshi Clothing Sector uses 1.5 crores litters of water per year, for weaving & dying purposes. World Bank Member Organization International Finance Corporation (IFC) reports this in their research on 33 dying & finishing units inKonabari area of Gazipur.Their observation show that, clothing industries pump water from underground. This is causingrapid decrease in the deep underground water level. Such massive use of fresh water can cause serious crisis in near future.A single example from the report mention that, color-wash for Jeans pants require only 60-70 liters of water by international standard. Bangladeshi industries use more than 250 liters in that place. Usage of too much chemical & backdated technologies required them to do so. Such methods also require too much use of gas, and Bangladesh has a short gas reserve. Thus, industries are both wasting valuable natural resources & causing extra pollution to the environment, IFC concluded.
