In a shocking statement, Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rejaul Karim yesterday said the capital’s development authority has been directed to prevent the construction of unplanned buildings. “We will take strict legal actions against illegally constructed buildings,” he said as he was replying to a question at a review meeting on ‘Urban Resilience Project’ of Rajuk on earthquake, reports UNB.
Risky and uninhabitable buildings are being identified. “Once the process is complete, we will move ahead [with demolition],” he said.
The landlords will first be asked to tear them down. “If they do not comply, we will move to dismantle the structures following legal procedures,” the minister warned, adding, every building must be [constructed] in line with Rajuk’s plan.
“Any building outside the plan will face action,” he said. “Rajuk will have to strengthen its monitoring system in this regard.”
