Sylhet’s traditional art of ‘Shital Pati’ weaving has been graven on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO. At Jeju in South Korea, the recognition was given at UNESCO’s 12 ICH Committee session.According to its official website, this is the third ICH from Bangladesh inscribed by UNESCO. In 2016, the “Mangal Shobhajatra on Pahela Baishakh” and in “Baul songs” 2008 were inscribed.47 elements have been inscribed on the List of ICH in Need of Urgent Safeguarding to date in 26 countries. The Representative List of the ICH of Humanity numbers 365 elements in 108 countries.Shital Pati is a traditional art of making a handcraft mat by weaving together strips of a green cane known as ‘Murta’. The mat is used by people all over Bangladesh as to sit on, bedspread or for prayer.
